Job Summary: This job is responsible for handling radioactive materials and operating radionuclide measuring and imaging devices for the purpose of obtaining diagnostic information concerning various bodily functions and structures. Work is conducted under strict safety standards and in accordance with department protocols and regulatory/license requirements. Essential Duties: Operates and maintains quality control for all imaging equipment and radioactivity assaying devices in the Nuclear Medicine Department; calibrates cameras and equipment in accordance with internal protocols; verifies proper operation of equipment prior to use; checks radiation-monitoring devices and advises appropriate parties if problems are identified. Prepares radio-pharmaceuticals for patient use, administers radio-pharmaceuticals to patients and performs nuclear medicine procedures; uses appropriate camera in accordance with internal protocols; ensures that sufficient supplies are on hand to perform procedures; follows safeguards and protocols to ensure quality of results. Operates nuclear medicine computers to enhance the diagnostic value of information obtained from nuclear medicine procedures; follows internal protocols when processing computer studies to achieve high quality films by choice of filters, slice selection, display parameters, image intensity and labeling techniques. Maintains records and logs as required by department protocols and licensure requirements; logs patient dose administered, progress notes and other pertinent data. Responsibilities encompass all aspects of integral and separate effects test facilities from concept, design, specification, oversight of facilities construction, acquisition of equipment, inspection of and installation of equipment, maintenance and repair, program planning, design of tests, specific test procedures, test operations, data gathering and analysis of test results. The Principal Design Engineer reviews and approves layout and detailed drawings for test facility components and systems, and evaluates internal or contracted engineering and/or architectural work of medium to high complexity. The Principal Design Engineer must understand theories, principles, practical concepts, processes, and systems as related to nuclear and mechanical disciplines including heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and mechanics. The PED must have mastery of, and skill in applying, the theories and advanced state-of-the-art concepts and principles practiced in thermal-hydraulic system design and testing including knowledge of and ability to lead Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table (PIRT) Assessments and Analyses. The PED must understand basic principles and practical applications of test facility scaling, both for physical design and interpretation of experimental results, and must understand basic principles of statistics and design of experiments. The PED must have practical working knowledge of instrumentation, control of experimental equipment and automated data acquisition systems, including instrumentation and control logic as related to the safe performance of equipment and protection of facility operators and the public. The Principal Design Engineer must have familiarity with reactor safety analysis software, with an understanding of software and model applicable limitations leading to assisting in identification of gaps in experimental data for full verification of software. In direct relationship, the PED must have skill in designing test sequences to ensure scaled test responses replicate important phenomena, and associated data is applicable to verification of software models. The Principal Design Engineer will advise, execute, and oversee separate effects and integral testing programs. The PED will be responsible for training and qualification of test facility staff, and will be responsible for the performance, reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of test facilities operations and equipment. Work includes significant consideration of nuclear and industrial safety, and as such, requires a previous proven track record executing or managing similar facilities and operations. The Principal Design Engineer is responsible for institutionalizing a best-in-class nuclear safety culture for the facilities and operations under his or her direction.
