The Food Safety Specialist is responsible for establishing, implementing and directing Food Safety efforts to ensure all products manufactured meet accepted company standards and policies and Federal and State regulations in a food safe manner. Lead Microbiologist

This full time employee will help to oversee the daily process flow of sample testing and assist with quality systems pertaining to the Microbiology Laboratories. Responsibilities include observation and participation in microbiological procedures, managing laboratory workflow and equipment, and continuous evaluation and enforcement of the ISO quality policy. This position reports to the Director- Microbiology, Regulatory and Scientific Affairs. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1) Serves as a Microbiologist I, testing customer samples which include: -Sample dilution, plating, running rapid test kits and media QC set-up. -Reading and interpreting results. -Peer review of test results and sample approval into the LIMS system as requested. -Aid in the investigation and disposition of out-of-specification test results. -Ensure that all tests are set up using the appropriate methods and techniques. -Review the batch components each day for accuracy and completeness. -Manages next batch action report to ensure timely testing and reading of samples -Monitors Checkpoint system -Manages overdue report (daily) -As new methodologies or equipment are implemented, serve as the lead for troubleshooting any questions/issues. -Serves as a liaison between Sample Prep. and the micro. lab to ensure that sample flows is efficient and communicates any needed tests. 2) Ensure the department is compliant with the Quality System: -Evaluates the current policy to suggest changes regarding Standard Operating Procedures, forms, tests and training. -Conducts work in a manner that is compliant with the Quality System and all ISO 17025 requirements. -Works with Training and QS Coordinator to ensure proficiency testing is complete and submitted on time. -Enforces the Chemical Hygiene Plan and safety programs. -Accurately performs and documents equipment calibrations and preventative maintenance. -Ensures all samples are set up, reviews batch reports and signs off that testing was completed. -Monitors the LCS (laboratory control sample) records to ensure all tests are complete. -Manages next batch action reports and ensures samples are read on time. -Manages the overdue testing report; runs each day and turns in a copy to Client Services Representative. -Operate, troubleshoot, clean, calibrate/qualify and maintain microbiology instruments. -Assist QSA to implement necessary corrective actions regarding PAR/CAR?s and offer suggestions for improvement to processes/programs. -Monitors the checkpoint system for compliance -Assist in monitoring KPI?s for the department. 3) Coordinates any ?project" work. 4) Communicates daily media needs to the media department. 5) Monitors all PCR/ELISA/ELFA testing results and plate runs to look for compliance 6) Serves as the liaison between sample prep. and microbiology to ensure batches are created in the proper order and samples are available for testing. 7) Assists with training efforts for new employees. 8) Participates in the internal audits as requested 9) Works with the QSA and Purchasing Coordinator to ensure the proper approved supplies are kept in stock.
