This site is designed to the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) HTML 4.01 Strict and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) specifications. As such this site is best viewed using a fully CSS and DOM compliant browser (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5+, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Netscape 6+, etc.).
Due to the expected growth of users using handheld devices to connect to the Internet (e.g. cell phones and PDAs) we have made design considerations to make this site more useable with such devices. As there are a myriad of such devices and we don't personally use them we are unable to test this site on handheld devices. As such, most of our design considerations for handheld devices are purely theoretical. If you are a user of a handheld device, we'd love some feedback as to this site's usability with such a device.
While some pages on this site are impossible to completely render with special accessibility needs without destroying the functionality of those pages for other users (e.g. our graphical presentation of the periodic table of elements), we have made great efforts to try and make all content on this site accessible to those with special needs including, when necessary providing alternative formats. While we do not have the ability to use devices like dynamic Braille displays, we do test this site using text only browsers like Lynx to get a general feeling of how this site might render for those using such devices.
Due to limitations with Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) and its incorrect implementation of some W3C CSS specifications, there are some usability issues with our pages if certain accessibility features are used within Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, we can not resolve the key display issue for users who have implemented certain poor vision accessibility features within MSIE without destroying the usability of our pages for other accessibility challenged users (e.g. users of dynamic Braille displays) and users of handheld devices. Again, these issues are caused by MSIE's incomplete and incorrect implantation of established web development standards. If accessibility is an issue and you need to use larger fonts, we would recommend switching to a browser that properly implements W3C specifications as it will resolve these issues on our site and others. Our recommended browser is Mozilla Firefox.
The pages on this site are written and designed using text editors (currently Ken uses UltraEdit) and implemented using Apache, PHP and MySQL.
